Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene Filter Cartridges - Most Frequently Asked Questions
Q - What is the difference between Strung Wound and Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene cartridges?
A - Strung wound cartridges look like a ball of string, Spun Polypropylene cartridges look like a tube of high quality foam. Strung wound cartridges have been around for many years whilst the Spun Polypropylene cartridge has only become popular in recent years. Both types of cartridges perform equally well, however the Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene cartridges cost less to buy and are approved by NSF® (independent test lab) for the preparation of food and beverages such as soft drinks, tea, coffee etc.).
Q - How often should the cartridges be changed?
A - The time between filter changes is dependent on the quality of your water and how much water you use. The poorer the quality and the more water you use, the more often the filter cartridges will need changing. However, as a rough guide you can expect to change the cartridges every 3 to 6 months.
Q - How do I know it’s time to change my filter cartridge?
A. Filter cartridges need changing at least every six months as a precaution against unwanted bacterial growth. However, some people wait for the cartridges to block the flow of water and / or they wait until “bits” start coming through to the tap, at which point they change the cartridge.
Q - Can I wash Strung Wound cartridges?
A. Some people put the cartridges in a washing machine or they hose them down to clean them. Neither practice is a good idea as they break down the body of the filter cartridge, dramatically reducing its performance. If you want to reuse or wash cartridges then look at our range of Flow-Max® pleated cartridges.
Q - Will this cartridge remove taste and odour, or scale / scum from my water?
A - No. Please see related products for cartridges that treat these problems.
Q. What are the differences between 1, 5, 20 and 50 micron cartridges?
A - The smaller the number the finer the cartridge, that is, the more contaminants it will remove from your water. However, the disadvantage of finer cartridges is that they will block quicker and they are likely to restrict the flow and pressure more than the higher micron rating (e.g. 50 micron).
Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene Filter Cartridges - Typical Applications
- Whole house filtration (install on the main pipe into the house after the stop valve).
- Commercial premises that have more than one drinking tap or where a process relies on clean water and high volumes of water.
- Filters drinking water that contains some cloudiness (particles)
- Used on mains water where old pipes are creating rust particles, or if there is any other debris in the water.
Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene Filter Cartridges - Major Benefits
- Traditionally, Strung Wound cartridges have been the cartridge filter of choice for most people installing a high flow water filter. However, many people are now using Spun Polypropylene filter cartridges as they are at least equal to Stung Wounds, but cost less to buy.
- Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene cartridges are NSF® approved for the preparation of food and beverages (such as soft drinks, tea and coffee).
- The finely meshed body of a Flo-Pro® Spun Polypropylene cartridge prevents even small particles from passing through whilst at the same causing little drop in flow or pressure (when the cartridge is new). They offer no media migration which means, unlike Strung Wound cartridges, they do not need flushing through when you first put them in.
- The cartridge is open at both ends which means, the cartridge (once removed from the housing) can be inspected to see if debris is “breaking” through causing discolouration on the inside. When this occurs it’s time to change the cartridge.
